Film-filled Balboa Park Engagement Photos // San Diego Engagement Photographer

If you’ve never made it over to Balboa Park in San Diego, move it on up to the top of your list. As a San Diego wedding photographer, Balboa Park is such a stunning place for engagement photos—especially for the couple going for an old Hollywood editorial feel. Portrait locations are endless! If you can time it right on a weekday or during off hours, there are not too many people around. Plus, exploring the park is a ton of fun. It’s easy to get into a photographic groove as you stroll through gardens and stare into each other’s eyes beneath intricate archways. The whole park is so romantic and beautiful! Ornate historic buildings with old-world architecture provide so many spots that you could get lost there for hours. If you aren’t doing the beach or other natural landscape, Balboa Park is a unique location for your engagement photos (or your elopement or wedding photos if you want to go to a location outside of your venue).

Mimi and Gage wore traditional Vietnamese wedding attire for their Balboa Park engagement photos. Given their eye-catching attire and obvious in-love state, passersby gave them warm congratulations throughout the whole session, which made everything more fun. Their cultural outfits photographed beautifully, and I love learning and celebrating so many cultures. Wearing traditional attire is also a fun way to incorporate your heritage and culture into your wedding

As for artistic style, we shot a lot of film during their session. If you know me, you know I was all about it! However, Gage is also a photographer who specializes in experimental photography.  So, after finishing their session and all the edits, I sent him all the negatives so he could play with the photos.  I so can’t wait to see if he creates more art from these images!!

Planning Your Balboa Park Engagement Photos

When planning your engagement photoshoot in Balboa Park, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind to ensure a fun, seamless experience.

First, do some research and familiarize yourself with the park’s layout. Balboa Park spans over 1,200 acres, so knowing which areas you want to explore and capture in your photos will help save time and make the most of your session. Consider scouting the park or website for potential locations and identify spots that resonate with your vision (I can help with that, too!).

Another crucial aspect to consider is obtaining any necessary permits. While Balboa Park is a public space, certain areas may require permits for professional photography. Check with the park authorities or the Balboa Park Visitors Center to ensure you have the necessary permissions to shoot in your desired locations to avoid any potential disruptions.

Lastly, don’t forget to consider the weather and time of year. San Diego’s climate is generally pleasant, but it’s always a good idea to check the forecast before your shoot. The park’s beauty changes with the seasons, so consider the time of year that aligns with your vision. Spring offers vibrant blooms and blossoms, while autumn showcases warm colors and falling leaves. Plan accordingly to capture the desired ambiance for your engagement photos.

The Best Time of Day for Engagement Photos in Balboa Park

The right time of day can make a significant difference in the outcome of your engagement photos. Balboa Park offers different lighting conditions throughout the day, each with its unique charm.

1. Sunrise: If you’re an early riser, consider scheduling your photoshoot during sunrise. The soft, golden light during this time of day creates a romantic and dreamy atmosphere. The park is usually less crowded in the morning, allowing you to capture intimate moments without distractions.

2. Golden Hour: The hour before sunset, often referred to as the golden hour, is widely regarded as the best time for outdoor photography. The warm, golden light during this time casts a magical glow over the park, adding a touch of enchantment to your engagement photos. Plan your photoshoot accordingly to take advantage of this ethereal lighting.

3. Nighttime: For a more dramatic and unique engagement shoot, consider scheduling your session during the evening. Balboa Park is beautifully lit at night, with architectural highlights and illuminated pathways. The park’s romantic ambiance takes on a whole new level after dark, providing a captivating backdrop for your photos.
