Las Vegas-inspired Barbiecore Disco Wedding
You don’t need a pink Barbie wedding gown to have a Barbie wedding day, and you don’t have to be in Vegas to tie the knot in Vegas style. I’m so excited to spill all the dazzling details about a nontraditional wedding that was truly unforgettable. Scar and Morrigan’s Las Vegas-style disco wedding was anything but traditional, and I had the absolute pleasure of capturing every sparkling moment.
First, a little backstory: Scar, Morrigan, and I all graduated from Columbia College Chicago with BAs in photography. We’ve been through countless photo projects together, so when they reached out to hire me as their wedding photographer, you can bet I was over the moon. It’s always extra special when fellow photographers trust you to capture their big day.
True to their nonconformist nature, Scar and Morrigan ditched all traditional wedding norms. Instead of getting ready in a hotel or Airbnb, they chose a photo studio for its professional backdrop and lighting. Morrigan works at a photo studio, so it was the perfect fit. They dressed separately and strolled out in stunning outfits, ready to embark on the day’s adventure.
We utilized a full studio setup for their family photos and portraits, making for some glimmering images that are nothing short of art. Getting ready in a photography studio is a fabulous idea, especially with the abundance of unique studios around DTLA. Whether you prefer moody lighting or gorgeous natural light, there’s a studio that can cater to your vision.
When Scar and Morrigan briefed me on their wedding photography style, they emphasized, “This wedding is NOT serious and 100% dedicated to the aesthetics. Let’s do everything possible to end up on someone else’s Pinterest wedding board. We’re gonna die someday, and we want to show our future kids we used to be fun, young, and plain hot.”
And boy, did they deliver! These two wanted bold images with lots of flash—think Vegas meets Barbiecore. The entire wedding took place after sunset, making it easy to play around with flash and low light. Plus, these two were down for anything and trusted the process, and couples who trust the process always end up with the best images and wedding days ever!
Let’s talk decor because it was EVERYTHING. Disco balls cast infinite sparkles across the room, creating an unforgettable ambiance during their first dance. The bright pinks and reds in the florals enhanced those Barbiecore vibes, and Morrigan’s dad built a massive heart on the stage for photos and speeches—how incredible is that? The metallic tinsel backdrop was the cherry on top, elevating their aesthetic even more. Add a sparkle filter, and I was dying over and over from all the intricate details and thought these two put into their day.
And let’s talk about that pink shopping cart they spray-painted themselves! These two make DIY look easy, achieving professional wedding designer quality on their own.
Scar and Morrigan didn’t want a formal dinner; they wanted to host a full-on party. They kicked things off with a brief ceremony followed by an evening of fun. The celebration involved a full weed bar featuring edibles, joints, and THC-infused drinks. There was also a munchie section displayed in a pink shopping cart next to the bar, because of course, there was.
Knowing their partygoers weren’t big dancers, they set up tables with their favorite board games and custom crosswords for everyone to play. Dancing is fun, but so is an intriguing game of Codenames with friends! They had Domino’s delivered for their late-night food, which was a hit.
They even provided thrifted vintage cups for everyone to use during the wedding, which guests could take home as gifts. We love a sustainable moment!
Scar and Morrigan’s wedding was a perfect example of how doing things your way can result in the most unique and personal photos and experiences ever. Their love for art, fun, and each other shone through every detail of the day, making it a celebration I’ll never forget.
So, here’s to Scar and Morrigan—your wedding was a colorful, bold, and beautiful disco dream, and I couldn’t be more honored to have captured it. If you envision a nontraditional wedding as unique as you are, take a page out of their book. Break the rules, have fun, and ‘make it art.’
XOXO,
Hanna
“Hanna was hands down the only wedding photographer we would have ever worked with. Hanna is professional, talented, and cares DEEPLY about every shot taken. When sharing our wedding photography vibes and goals, Hanna was so excited and took our vision with extreme consideration in every shot she took. If you’re anxious about missing a detail, don’t worry because Hanna totally has it thought of and covered. She’ll be with you from day one, answering questions and providing guidance. There’s so much to say about how fantastic Hanna is, but honestly, you just need to book her to find out for yourself! She’s a spectacular vendor—you’d be doing yourself a disservice not working with her. We cannot recommend Hanna more!
