If you’re planning a San Francisco elopement, micro wedding, or intimate wedding, it’s hard to imagine a more scenic setting than the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park. The winding paths, towering trees, quiet corners, and ever-changing seasonal blooms offer a relaxed, natural space for couples who want their wedding day to feel personal and unhurried.
Camilla and Jason’s full-day San Francisco Botanical Garden elopement is a perfect example of how an intimate wedding can unfold naturally — with time to explore the city, pause for intimate moments, and celebrate with the people who matter most.
This guide walks through their day, sharing helpful ideas for couples planning their own intimate wedding or micro wedding in San Francisco.

Why the San Francisco Botanical Garden Is Perfect for an Intimate Wedding
One of the best things about planning a San Francisco Botanical Garden elopement is the balance between accessibility and privacy. Located inside Golden Gate Park, the garden feels tucked away from the city without actually leaving it.
Because visitors must purchase tickets to enter, the space naturally feels quieter and more private — especially compared to other public locations around San Francisco. For couples planning an intimate wedding or micro wedding, that built-in privacy makes a huge difference.
Camilla and Jason chose a small wooden deck overlooking a pond for their ceremony. It wasn’t just a pretty spot; it’s a place that holds a piece of their story. They used to spend time in the garden when they were first getting to know each other, long before they realized those “friendly hangouts” were actually dates. Returning to that space for their vows made the ceremony feel deeply personal.
The surrounding greenery, layered textures, and soft light also make the San Francisco Botanical Garden especially photogenic. From exotic bamboo groves to blooming magnolias and towering redwoods, every corner offers something different without needing to travel far. It felt like a quick trip around the world as we ventured into different settings.

Starting Your San Francisco Elopement with Getting Ready at an Airbnb
Camilla and Jason began their day at a beautiful Victorian-style San Francisco Airbnb, a choice that works especially well for San Francisco micro weddings and elopements.
Getting ready in a home — whether it’s your own or a rental — creates a more relaxed environment. There’s more room to move, more natural light, and more opportunities for quiet, documentary-style moments. Family members can gather comfortably, conversations unfold naturally, and the morning feels less rushed.
It also allows everyone to stay in one place, which can simplify logistics for a smaller wedding. For couples planning an intimate San Francisco wedding, a homelike setting helps the day feel personal from the very beginning.
Camilla’s dress — comfortable, modern, and effortless — fit perfectly with the day’s relaxed tone and garden setting. The layers of sheer white fabric felt very bridal while keeping her warm and adding fashionable visual interest.

A Secret Ceremony in the San Francisco Botanical Garden
After getting ready, everyone headed to Golden Gate Park for their intimate ceremony at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. This particular dock looks like a floating island in the middle of a hidden pond, and I loved the opportunity to shoot from multiple angles and sides of the dock.
For couples planning an intimate wedding in San Francisco, this is one of the Botanical Garden’s biggest benefits. The natural surroundings already provide so much beauty, allowing you to keep things simple and intentional.
Camilla and Jason also incorporated film photography throughout the day — I use a mix of 35mm and medium format — adding an artistic, timeless quality to their images and aligning with their goal of candid, documentary-style coverage.

Slowing Down After the Ceremony
Instead of jumping straight into formal photos, Camilla and Jason took time to enjoy appetizers and a champagne toast with their guests, making space for lots of hugs, laughter, and conversation.
For micro weddings and elopements, an intentional pause can make a big difference. Like a non-traditional receiving line, mingling over apps and bubbles feels more natural and less structured.
Afterward, they moved into family photos and some fun group portraits before their guests headed to dinner. With no rigid timeline, the day flowed easily from one moment to the next. I recommend all-day or at least four-hour photography coverage — even for elopements — for this reason. You’ll appreciate having the full experience documented without rushing to get it all in.

Exploring Golden Gate Park and Favorite San Francisco Spots
One of the biggest advantages of a Golden Gate Park elopement is the ability to explore.
After family photos, Camilla and Jason wandered through the Botanical Garden, stopping in each section. Since many weddings I shoot take place at structured venues, I really enjoyed the creative freedom of the gardens and the opportunity to capture the “personality” of each location.
From there, they walked to a nearby coffee shop to have a quiet moment together while I paused the shutter and stepped away to give them privacy. (While I love being your personal paparazza, I am also happy to give you some moments to yourselves. Just say the word! Micro weddings and longer elopements are ideal for that very reason. You can press pause when needed to fully enjoy your day.)
They continued exploring local shops and snapping a few romantic book store photos before heading to dinner with their guests.

Ending the Day with Dinner at Dalida
The celebration concluded with dinner at Dalida, one of San Francisco’s best restaurants. Sharing a meal together was the perfect way to celebrate with their closest crew.
But the day didn’t end there.
After dinner and once the sun had set, they made one last spontaneous stop at the Golden Gate Bridge. It had started raining, and the sky was completely dark, but they embraced the moment anyway. The result was a series of atmospheric, memorable images that captured the spirit of the day.
Sometimes, taking a little risk — stepping into the rain, staying out after dark — creates the most meaningful memories. These photos turned out to be some of our favorites!
