Los Angeles Maternity Photographer // Studio Session

I was honored when Melissa and Travis asked me to be their Los Angeles maternity photographer. Even better, they asked me to help them style it — a dream come true! They had an idea of what they wanted for their maternity portraits, but they wanted a bit of help fine-tuning their vision. Together, we created a mood board and considered outfits to design this soft, intimate, and sexy maternity session. I think we hit the nail on the head, and I’m obsessed with how these warm, beautiful images turned out. The one thing I want my couples to know is that a photo session with me is so much more than “taking pictures” – it’s creating art together through photography. It’s an experience, and one I hope you’ll enjoy. Planning with you and helping you realize your vision puts the wind in my sails!

That being said, I often find that expecting couples appreciate a bit of styling guidance. Your growing bump is so beautiful, and I know you’re sooooo excited to meet that little one. But dressing said bump can be a bit tricky. In my experience, here are a few outfit ideas that tend to photograph beautifully for maternity sessions:

How to Dress the Bump // Los Angeles Maternity Photographer

Flowy Maxi Dress

You don’t even need to shop the maternity section for these! If you find a midi or maxi skirt or dress that cinches above your bump, most full skirts will flow beautifully over your bump while accentuating your figure. These best-sellers by Baltic Born will look beautiful with or without a bump. Pink Blush has a variety of maternity styles as well.

Flowy dresses work exceptionally well for outdoor sessions, whether we’re in the city or exploring the beach, mountains, or grassy fields. (Long dresses tend to be very comfortable as well.)

Boudoir Attire

You could split this into several subcategories: lingerie (or nothing and a sheet!), robe / kimono / sheer lace, or comfy loungewear like a sports bra and panties. I love the two different looks Melissa went with. First, she wore a sheer off-the-shoulder gown to show off her silhouette, and then she switched to boyfriend jeans and Calvin Klein bra. All of Melissa’s outfits kept with her classic look and style.

Swim / Beach Attire

Are you down for a beachy maternity session with me? Grab your swimsuit, towel, and floppy hat and let’s go! (Don’t forget your sunnies.) I’m already brainstorming all kinds of sun-kissed images we can create together! Plus, the lapping waves and salty sea air may give you some much-needed R&R and quality time with your other half before little one arrives.

Best Locations for Maternity Sessions

Your vision and attire may guide your location options. (We probably won’t be taking boudoir maternity photos at a park.) Please share a bit about you, your vision, and your style, and I’d be happy to recommend a few location options for your couples or maternity session. Get in touch with me here.

Popular maternity photoshoot locations include:

-At home
-Studio rental
-Natural landscape (mountains, fields, or park)
