Nicole and Juan plan to get married in Mexico. For their engagement photos, they really wanted to have the same vibes that they would get from their wedding venue. Now one thing that I’ve always wanted to do is shoot on a sailboat. So when we were brainstorming ideas, I suggested this idea to Nicole & Juan and they were all for it! Within 2 weeks the sailboat was reserved and we were on our way for their SoCal Sailboat Engagement Photos.

When the day finally came I couldn’t have been more excited. We were cruising through golden hour in a sailboat overlooking the skyline and it was just SO much fun. Like I said, I had never shot on a sailboat before and let me tell you it’s so much harder than it looks. The boat is moving up and down with the waves and you’re constantly moving so having a steady hand can be a bit tricky. All I could think about was how was I going to keep the horizon straight in the background LOL. One of the many benefits though is that you never get the same type of background. In return this can make for some pretty creative shots, imo. If anybody saw us on this sailboat you definitely would have seen me holding onto something almost the entire way. This made for a great challenge for me and my photography skills and I think honestly it paid off. Nonetheless, it was still such an amazing experience and I would do it all over again.

Nicole and Juan are both drop dead gorgeous and just like a model couple. They both made the session such a blast and were down for all of my crazy ideas. I absolutely love when my couples are able to trust my creative vision and are very go with the flow. While everyone has their own ideas for their engagement photos, sometimes it’s nice to try something different. One of my favorite moments was definitely being able to see golden hour overlooking the city skyline. I’m such a sucker for golden hour and I mean come on – we’re on a boat in the middle of the water!

As the sun went down and their engagement session was coming to an end, we decided to play around with flash. I’ve been really trying to get more into using flash photography lately. I’ve been slowly playing around and switching up my style so this was a fun session to get creative. Nicole & Juan were drinking some glasses of champagne and having a great time enjoying the final moments of the day. It was such a gorgeous shoot and I’m so happy that I was able to be there for Nicole & Juan. I was also super excited to check off being on a sailboat off of my bucket list!

Also, if any of you are newly engaged and want to do something different for your engagement photos – sign me up! I’m always down to help you out with ideas and going on an adventure and doing something different. While weddings can be filled with the traditional gorgeous backdrops, your engagement photos can be a bit more laid-back and fun. You can really do anything and have fun with it, all I ask is that you have me tag along!
