The Top 3+ Los Angeles City Halls for Stunning Elopement Photos
If you envision a dreamy Southern California elopement, let’s talk about some incredible city hall options. Los Angeles has several unique city halls that make for beautiful backdrops to your “I dos.” As a LA elopement photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing love stories in some of the most gorgeous spots. Here are my top three picks for the best Los Angeles city halls for breathtaking elopement photos. (Psst–I’ve got a few extras at the end for you, too. If a wedding in San Francisco City Hall sounds fun, I’ve got you covered!)
Note: Before heading to the courthouse, make sure you apply for your marriage license up to three months in advance. You cannot get your license and do your courthouse ceremony the same day. Learn more about applying for your marriage license here.
**Most civil ceremony fees are about $35.
You’ve heard the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but when it comes to the Beverly Hills Courthouse, it’s the opposite. The inside might not be much to write home about, but the outside location is unbeatable! The real gem here is the Beverly Hills City Hall building right next door. With its stunning architecture and vibrant Art Deco hallways, the photo ops are endless.
Why You’ll Love It
Location, Location, Location: You’re smack dab in the middle of Beverly Hills, just steps away from the iconic palm tree-covered streets, the Beverly Hills sign, and stunning hotels where you can celebrate afterward.
Colorful Art Deco Skybridge: These hallways are perfect for walking shots that add a pop of color to your photos.
Endless Photo Spots: Beautiful gardens for your first look, elegant portraits, and all the quintessential California vibes you could ask for.
Heads-Up
The Inside Isn’t Cute: The courthouse interior is pretty basic, and the ceremony is quick and not overly personal. (But that’s ok! We’ll make up for it in portraits! Bring your handwritten vows for an extra-personalized touch.)
Permit Fees: There’s a small permit fee for shooting at the City Hall building.
Lines and Wait Time: You might have to wait in line for your quick ceremony, so patience is key.(This is the case for most city halls.)
If you’re looking for the best-looking courthouse in LA, Pasadena City Hall is a total showstopper. Seriously, the grounds are stunning and perfect for both engagement sessions and weddings. The architecture here is like a dream, and the natural light is gorgeous all day long.
Why You’ll Love It
Stunning Architecture: From the courtyard to the rotunda, every corner of this place is picture-perfect.
Flexibility: With a permit, you can even get married on the grounds, courtyard, or rotunda.
Great Lighting: The natural light at Pasadena City Hall makes for beautiful photos any time of day.
Convenient Parking & No Fees: There’s plenty of parking and no permit fees for shooting inside.
Heads-Up
Popularity: This is a super popular spot, so expect other wedding and engagement shoots happening simultaneously.
Permit Requirements: We’ll need to apply a few weeks in advance for a photographer’s permit. You’ll need a separate permit if you opt for a ceremony on the grounds with your own officiant. You can find that here.
Located in downtown LA, Los Angeles City Hall is a fantastic choice for couples looking for a modern yet classic vibe. The clean, white building with stunning arches is perfect for romantic and editorial-style portraits. Plus, its central location means you’re just a stone’s throw away from other iconic LA spots like the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Why You’ll Love It
Iconic Architecture: The clean lines and arches lend themselves to elegant, timeless photos.
Convenient Location: Easy access to major highways means you can quickly hop to other great photo spots around LA.
Variety: From romantic to grungy downtown vibes, you get a range of looks for your session.
Heads-Up
Busy Area: In downtown LA, expect some hustle and bustle, but that just adds to the urban charm!
If you’re open to a short drive outside of LA, there are a couple more city halls that are worth considering:
Santa Barbara City Hall Elopement
Santa Barbara City Hall is an absolute dream if you’re up for a little drive. Known for its breathtaking grounds and stunning indoor options, this location lets you have an outdoor ceremony with beautiful backdrops or use its old courtrooms and elaborate staircases for epic photos. You can even go up to the top floor for panoramic views of Santa Barbara.
San Francisco City Hall Wedding
Lastly, if you’re considering an iconic spot, a San Francisco City Hall wedding should be on your radar. This location is on everyone’s mood boards for a reason! The lighting, the architecture—everything is perfect. Plus, it’s super easy to get married here, with various areas available for rent so your family can join the celebration too.
These outside locations may offer more flexibility in ceremony spots than LA’s city halls, allowing for a more personalized touch on your wedding day.
So there you have it—my top three Los Angeles city halls for elopement pictures (along with a couple of must-consider spots outside the city). Each location has unique charm and beauty, perfect for capturing your love story. Ready to elope? Let’s make some magic together!
